The Taxation Division of the Colorado Department of Revenue administers state tax laws and programs while promoting voluntary compliance through education, assistance, accountability, and exceptional customer service. The Division works with taxpayers, businesses, tax professionals, and local governments to ensure taxes are reported, collected, and distributed accurately and efficiently. The Distribution Accounting Unit supports this mission by reviewing tax returns, payments, and account activity for various types, including sales, use, retailers use, lodging, local marketing, and wage withholding taxes. The Distribution Accounting Unit identifies and resolves account discrepancies, researches filing and payment issues, processes account adjustments, and helps ensure tax revenues are accurately distributed to state and local jurisdiction throughout Colorado.
The typical day as Tax Examiner-I As a Tax Examiner-I, you will review tax returns, payments and account information to ensure business tax accounts are accurate and compliance with state tax laws. The Tax Examiner-I will analyze account activity, research discrepancies, determine appropriate corrective actions, and make account adjustments when necessary. This position requires strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and the ability to interpret and apply tax laws, polices and procedures. In addition, to examining accounts, the Tax Examiner-I will serve as a resource for taxpayers by answering questions, providing guidance on filing requirements, and explaining tax laws and processes. Through research, problem solving, and customer service, the Tax Examiner-I will help promote voluntary compliance while ensuring tax revenues are distributed accurately and efficiently.
Remote Notice: This is a remote position primarily conducted via telework/work-from-home arrangements. Occasional travel to a State or alternate location may be required based on business needs. The selected candidate must maintain Colorado residency throughout their employment and comply with all applicable State of Colorado and department remote work policies, procedures, and requirements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience: High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) AND Two (2) years of experience in customer service environment. OR Education and Experience: A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to Accounting, Business, Economics, Finance, or a related field as determined by the Department may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
Substitutions: Additional appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Employees are in a position of public trust in the performance of their job duties and must operate in a manner that maintains the highest standards of honesty, integrity, and public confidence.
As a condition of employment with the CDOR, all personnel must file all necessary Colorado Individual Income Tax (CIIT) returns and pay tax obligations, therefore all employees must undergo a pre-employment evaluation of their tax records/accounts to ensure compliance with this policy. Final candidates must also complete a successful background investigation and reference check prior to appointment. Certain positions based on duties may require scheduled background investigations.
